COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

Comparative adjectives describe the difference between two things.

·        For adjectives with one syllable, use adjective + er. The word "than" often follows comparative adjectives.

·        If an adjective ends in one vowel and one consonant, double the consonant, as in big --> bigger. 

·        If the adjective ends in –e, just add –r.

·        For most adjectives with two or more syllables, use more +adjective.

·        For two-syllable adjectives that end in –le, add –r.

·        For two-syllable adjectives that end in –y, change the –y to I and add-er.

Complete each sentence below with the correct comparative form. Use your own opinions.

How To Be More Confident Starting Today - ESL Worksheet

Today's worksheet is about confidence. Everyone  struggles with self-confidence to some extent; ESL students are no different. Yet, this article doesn't deal with self-confidence in learning another language, but rather with developing self-confidence in everyday life, everyday interactions. I've included some tips on developing self-confidence as well as a questionnaire for students to complete. You can use the questionnaire as a springboard for discussion as well.

 HOW TO BE MORE CONFIDENT

What does confidence mean to you?

Do you know someone who is very confident? How do you know that they are?

The world has become a very competitive place. Everywhere we see people who are smarter, richer or better looking. The Internet and news are full of stories of people who have succeeded and people who have failed. All of this has made people anxious and has made some people less confident. Yet it does not have to be that way. You can become more confident. To be confident means to be sure of one's self. To have confidence is to believe in your value and ability.

Practice these tips to become more confident today.

1.   Know why. Why do you want to be more confident? Write down the reasons. What will happen if you don't become more confident? Write these down too. Knowing why will help you stay committed to your goal.

2.   Take two. Take two minutes every day to practice a confident pose. Stand with your back straight and your shoulders back. Do this in front of a mirror. Do it before important events.

3.   Record your successes. Everyone has successes. You have done many things in life to be proud of. Write them down and keep the list with you in your wallet or purse. Read them each day.

4.   Fake it. Imagine that you are a confident person. Stand with confidence and speak with confidence. Practice this for at least three weeks. In time, you will start to feel confident in your mind.

5.   Be polite. Being confident does not mean being rude or arrogant. It means respecting yourself and others. It means being true to yourself. You can do this and still remain polite. 

HOW TO BE CONFIDENT AT WORK

What are your ideas about confidence? Test yourself and find out! Read each statement and decide if it is TRUE or FALSE.

1.      Managers are often more confident than other employees.

2.      It is easier to be confident when you are well-dressed.

3.      All good employees are confident.

4.      Mistakes always make a person lose confidence.

5.      People who are more beautiful are more confident.

6.      People who exercise are usually more confident.

7.      Self-confidence takes practice. There is no other way.

8.      A confident person has more friends than others.

9.      People who are confident usually make more money.

10.    Having confidence means not making mistakes.

11.    People with self-confidence are usually more successful.

12.    People who are confident usually take more risks.

13.    Confident people usually have confident children.

14.    You can be humble and confident at the same time.

15.    Arrogance and confidence are one and the same.

16.    People who are confident are usually more polite.

17.    People who are confident are usually ruder to others.

18.    Anyone can learn to be confident.

All About Libraries & Library of Congress - Printable ESL Worksheet

Good Morning and Happy Monday!

This week's Monday Morning Worksheet is all about libraries. With summer just around the corner, I thought it would be a good time to discuss the benefits of libraries with my students. 

The main task for this week's worksheet is a short article with comprehension questions. Following the questions, students plan and write an essay about libraries (Think & Write). I've also included a few short related articles to read and discuss once students have finished the essay. The Scavenger Hunt task can be given for homework.

Encouraging Students to Get Library Cards

Students have just enough time to go to a library, explore getting a library card, and come back to class with questions and feedback for their classmates. If I could, I'd have all my students get a library card as a homework assignment, but this is not always practical!

Libraries Can Be Intimidating

I've found that ESL students, unfortunately, can find libraries intimidating - all those books they can't read or understand! Talking about libraries and how to get a library card can help to demystify libraries so that students can take advantage of this amazing resource. Another priceless benefit is that adult ESL students will often take their children with them! I advise my students to take their kids and even ask their older kids for help if they need to.

Directions: Fill in each blank in the story with the word that fits best.

Emma and Chris were married on the first of May. The next morning, Emma and Chris decided to go out for breakfast. Chris asked Emma where she would like to go. Chris enjoyed fancy _____. He wanted to take Emma to a fancy _____ for breakfast. However, Emma wanted to go someplace _____. She was tired from a late wedding. Also, she did not want to dress up too much. The couple decided to go to a nearby _____ for breakfast, called Mel's Diner.

Mel's Diner was a _____ restaurant near the couple's new house. When Emma saw the diner, she was nervous. She remembered a TV show about a diner called Mel's Diner. The people in the show were funny, but the food was awful. No one liked the food at Mel's Diner. Chris said that a diner in real life was probably not the same as a _____ on television. Emma agreed, and so they went in.

Emma and Chris walked in and liked what they saw. The _____ of the diner was typical, but the inside was very nice. The entire diner was red with shiny _____  trim. Suddenly, Mel said to Emma and Chris, "Wait a minute. I'll be back."

Mel came back with a basket of flowers. He put them on a large table and moved the couple to the table.

Mel said, "These flowers were _____ from California, and came this morning. I'm so happy that you came to my diner for your first meal! Your breakfast is on the house. We'll make you a very special breakfast today!"

Mel made a lovely breakfast for the couple: bacon, eggs and fluffy pancakes. There was also orange juice and sparkling grape juice. For dessert, Emma and Chris shared an ice cream sundae with whipped cream on top. When the couple got up to leave, Mel rushed over and gave them the basket of flowers.

Mel smiled and said, "Enjoy these on your first day as newlyweds!"

The couple was surprised and pleased. They could not have wished for a better start to their new life!
