EATING HEALTHY - EATING OUT

Many people today have problems when it comes to food. Some people are allergic to certain foods. Others want to eat only organic food. Still others worry about staying slim.

 

Allergies are a common problem today. Some people are allergic to milk. Others are allergic to nuts. People who are allergic to many foods often eat at home. Others may eat out, but they bring some of their food with them. However, it is still possible to eat out. Most restaurants today have special foods for people with allergies. You can order nondairy meals, eggless dishes or wheat-free foods.

 

There are people who do not have allergies, but they still want to eat healthy. They only want to have healthy and natural food. They do not want chemicals in their food. For this reason, some restaurants have dishes made only from organic ingredients.

Many people are also concerned about their weight. They want to stay slim. They may eat only vegetarian food or food without a lot of fat. Restaurants often have vegetarian or low-fat dishes for such people.

Whether you have allergies or want to eat only healthy foods, restaurants today have many delicious and healthy choices. It is a good time to be eating out!

Beverly Cleary - ESL Worksheet

Thank you for visiting my blog today, and every week! I try to create and post worksheets that I think students and teachers will enjoy and use. Seeing so many visitors to the blog is really very encouraging!

It's been a very hectic time for me. I'm working as a teacher again (yeah!), and trying to balance teaching with everything else. For now, I'll be posting every two weeks instead of every week. I've found that it's just not been possible to post every week. However, there are quite a few worksheets on the blog, so I do hope you'll still visit often to download whatever you need.

BEVERLY CLEARY

Have you ever heard of Ramona Quimby? Most American children have heard of Ramona. Ramona Quimby is a character from Beverly Cleary's books. Beverly Cleary is a famous author. She wrote more than 30 children's books. Beverly has sold more than 91 million books in English! Her books are also translated into other languages. Children around the world enjoy Beverly Cleary's books.

Beverly was born and raised in Oregon. She was born in 1916. When Beverly was little, she lived on a farm called Yamhill. There was no library near Yamhill. Beverly's mother asked the Oregon State Library to send books to Yamhill.

After some time, the Clearys moved to Portland. At first, Beverly did not like her new school. She could not read well. Beverly did not like to read boring school books. Later, Beverly found some interesting books at the library. She read them over and over. Beverly wanted to write interesting books for kids. She did not want kids to have only boring books.   

Beverly's first book was Henry Huggins. She wrote it more than 60 years ago! Henry Huggins is still popular today. It is about a boy, his dog and their friends. It takes place on Klickitat Street, in Portland.

Beverly's most popular books are those about Ramona Quimby. Beverly wrote several books before her Ramona books. Ramona is a spunky girl who sometimes makes mistakes. Many book characters today are spunky too. Yet this was not so when Beverly first wrote about Ramona. Ramona is a bit like Beverly was, as a child. Through Ramona, Beverly speaks to all kids about what it is like to be young.

Why are Beverly Cleary's books still popular? They are popular for many reasons. In her books, Beverly speaks to children in a respectful way. The child feels that someone understands them. They know how Ramona, Henry and the other kids feel. Adults do not always understand kids, but Beverly does! Also, in Beverly's books, children learn by trying to fix their mistakes. No one gives them long lessons about how to be good. It is a child's world with a child's problems, and the victories are that of the child.

Beverly Cleary is now 97 years old. She enjoyed writing her book all these years. She is happy that her readers still enjoy reading them! (532.038)

Superlative Adjectives - ESL Worksheet

Today's worksheet involves practice with superlatives. I posted a similar worksheet on comparatives a couple of weeks ago. The worksheet is pretty comprehensive as to the rules, so it works better for intermediate and advanced students.

SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

Superlative adjectives describe the difference between three things.

·         For adjectives with 1 syllable, use the + -est.   

·         If an adjective ends in 1 vowel and 1 consonant, double the consonant, as in big à the biggest. 

·         If the adjective ends in –e, add only –st., as in nice à the nicest.

·         For most adjectives with two or more syllables, use the most + adjective.

·         For two-syllable adjectives that end in –le, add only –st.

My Trip to Casablanca - ESL Worksheet - Past Tense

MY TRIP TO CASABLANCA

Last year, I visited Casablanca with my family. Casablanca is a famous and beautiful city in Morocco. My family and I stayed in Casablanca for a week, visiting my brother and his family. I enjoyed myself very much during my visit. My brother took us to many different places while we were in Casablanca. We went to several souks, including Old Medina Souk. Old Medina Souk is a popular souk in Casablanca. It has many interesting shops and little cafes. My family and I ate pastries at a small cafe in Old Medina Souk. We also had dinner at La Firdaous. La Firdaous is a well-known restaurant in Casablanca. I ordered lamb with apricots, and it was delicious! While we were in Casablanca, we rented a house on the beach. The house had a huge wall around it, and it was far from other houses. My family and I enjoyed swimming under the sun. We also played games on the beach. I saw some turtles out in the water. I was very surprised!  I enjoyed my time in Casablanca, and I was sad to leave. I hope to visit my brother again soon!

The Three Spinsters - A Fairytale - ESL Worksheet

Hope your Monday has been easier than mine! I am on an archaic computer that uses linux and is suspicious of every possible link in existence. If I get my post out today it will be a miracle. (Here's to hope and determination!)

Today's activity is a story and questions, a fairytale in fact. It's taken from those published by the Brothers Grimm, but modified slightly in order to fit on one page.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to upload the PDF for some reason, but I've included the story and questions below. Printing it as is should you give about a page, but you can always decrease the font if need be. As soon as I can get to a library, I will upload the PDF, etc.

THE THREE SPINSTERS  

Once upon a time, there was a lazy girl named Rose. Rose was beautiful and for this her mother was very proud. However, Rose's mother did not know what to do with such a lazy girl. One day, Rose's mother told Rose to spin some flax. Rose did not do anything. Instead, she sat and looked at herself in the mirror. At the end of the day, Rose's mother found that Rose had not spun anything. She became very angry. She hit Rose and sent her out of the house.

Rose sat on the porch and began to cry. It so happened that the Queen was passing in her carriage, and heard Rose crying. The Queen looked and was amazed to see such a beautiful girl. She asked Rose what was the matter and Rose told her. The Queen took pity on Rose and took her to the palace.

Now this Queen had a great hall full of fine flax near the palace, but no one to spin it. The Queen had an idea. She told Rose: If you can spin all this flax in three days, you shall have the Prince for a husband. If you do not, then you must leave the palace. The Queen did not need wealth, but wanted a good and beautiful wife for her son. 

Rose did not know what to do. She knew that if she went back home her mother would be angry. Yet she was too lazy to spin all that flax. As Rose sat looking out of the window, three spinsters walked by. They were as ugly as ugly could be. One had a huge fat lip. Another had a huge flat foot. The third had a thumb as big as an egg. The three women stopped when they saw Rose crying. They asked her what was wrong. Rose told them.

 

The spinsters had an idea. They told Rose: We will spin all this flax for you on one condition. You must invite us to your wedding. You must call us your aunts and let us sit at the wedding table. Rose agreed and the women began right away. They worked for three days and nights without stop. When they were finished, there was a great hall full of the finest and softest linen you had ever seen. The spinsters told Rose: Do not forget what you promised us. We will see you on your wedding day.

The Queen was pleased and set a wedding date. On the day of the wedding, Rose's family came and so did the three spinsters. They all sat at the wedding table. The Prince was repulsed at the sight of the spinsters and asked Rose who they were. Rose told them that they were her aunts. The Prince asked the spinsters what gave them such a big lip, a big thumb and a large foot. They told the Prince it was from spinning all day. The Prince was so shocked that he told Rose never to touch a spinning wheel again. And so it came about that Rose was free from spinning forever!
